Honoree Page
For those people I honor by riding.
Those who have passed
- Eddie, died in 1982, the cousin of Denise Fricano, a friend and fellow rider. He died alone in California, shunned by his friends and family.
- Patty Alvey-Smith, died May 28, 1986, a close high school friend. All but two of her friends abandoned her when they found out she had AIDS. She was an amazing woman. (View Photo)
- Olivia Limosuero & Ken Sigsby, died Aug. 1991, the aunt and uncle of Ted Zervoulakos, one of my sponsors.
- Mark Zerga, died 1996, an aquaintance who helped me to grow.
- David De Argon, died. Aug. 1994, the son of Norma & Leo De Argon, one of my sponsers.
- Moreel Love, died (unknown), the brother-in-law of one of my sponsors.
- Wil Leonard, died March, 2003, the the close friend of Kristina Dahl, one of my sponsors.
- Jim, died in 1997, a friend and coworker of Denise Fricano's. For reasons known only to him, no one knew of his illness until after he died.
- Jonathan Pon, died Dec. 29, 2001, co-founder of the Positive Peddlers, and longtime rider, advocate & spokesman of the AIDS rides. It was a presentation he gave before my first ride that first convinced me "I could do this".(View Photo and Testament)
- Steven Proietti, died, 1992, the brother of one of my sponsors.
- David Biscardi, died February 3, 1994, The brother of Jodie Biscardi-Getrent. They were extremely close and she is committed to raising her young son, Andrew, with the memories of an uncle he will not know. It was a pleasure walking and sharing time with them during the 2003 Walk For AIDS in San Jose.
Those currently living with HIV & AIDS
- Samuel, my son and personal hero; the primary reason why I ride. He was born HIV+ Aug. 23, 1997.(View Photo)
- Sharon, Samuel's mother. She was deliberately infected without her knowledge by a "druggy" boyfriend in 1993.
- Allen Mansel, a friend I mentored in 1994. He tested HIV+ in 1995.
- Ben Goldstein, perhaps one of the few truly "long term" survivors, he has lived half his life with HIV and AIDS, since 1978. Having never ridden a bicycle before, he rode in the AIDS LifeCycle in May, 2002. We met on one of my first training rides in 2002 and he is an inspiration to all.
- "Mo" Grundmann, the friend of Amy Hewett, one of my sponsors who touched me deeply with Mo's story. She was infected in 1981.
- Ilijus Flarity and his life partner, Don Boca, infected in 1986. The uncle of Caroline Flarity, another AIDS Rider and one of my sponsors.
- Amelia Garcia and her son, Armando Ivan Sarmiento, (born HIV+ in 1996). Like Sharon, Ameilia did not know she was infected until after Armando was born. They live in Mexico City, Mexico. She is the sister of a sweet woman, Christina Garcia, whom I met on a training ride. She worked at the Mexican restaurant where I had stopped for lunch. She came after me to give me a modest donation, and I feel blessed that even though she spoke little English, she took the time to share her story and support.
- John W. Lamb, infected in September, 1993. I met John while shopping at Target.
- The 3.9 million children currently living with HIV/AIDS.
- The millions who have died of AIDS in the last 20 years.
- The 46+ million people living with HIV and AIDS worldwide RIGHT NOW!
- For EVERYONE, who is at risk of becoming infected in the future.
